Dow promotes carbon-reducing polystyrene, supporting manufacturers in meeting environmental goals

BANGKOK – 5 May 2022 – Dow Thailand Group, a leading global materials science company, supports manufacturers in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by introducing the use of polystyrene as a substitute for ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) in electrical appliances and children's toys. This initiative saves energy consumption, reduces costs, and delivers a lower environmental impact, while also meeting the needs of modern consumers. With this initiative, companies are ready to lead the Thai manufacturing industry towards carbon neutrality.

Dow aims to be the most innovative and sustainable company in the world. The company is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by five million tons per year by 2030—a 15% reduction from the 2020 baseline and intends to be carbon neutral by 2025. Dow puts its efforts into using and developing technology that enables its products to use fewer resources and also helps Dow’s customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

For these reasons, Dow's polystyrene business has driven the application of High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) which is impact-resistant, lightweight, low-moisture absorption as well as lower in operating temperature; thus, saving energy, reducing production costs, reducing products’ carbon footprints, and supporting recycling. In the manufacturing of refrigerators, air conditioners, televisions, radios, furniture, and toys, HIPS is an environmentally friendlier solution, compared to traditional ABS materials. From 2019 to 2022, Dow has assisted Thai manufacturers to reduce carbon emissions up to 22,978 tons annually, equivalent to planting trees across 68,779 rai each year.

Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President, said, “Our society, economy, and the environment cannot be sustainable without the drive of eco-friendly consumption and business. To achieve our sustainability goals, innovation is the key. Dow is celebrating our 125th anniversary this year, we are an innovative organization committed to developing solutions that meet our customers’ needs and at the same time address environmental concerns. Dow is ready to support Thai industry on your carbon neutrality journey to enable long-term business growth, competitiveness on the world stage, and environmental sustainability.

Dow is one of the largest producers of high-quality polystyrene resins in Thailand. Our polystyrene manufacturing process produces less carbon emissions compared to conventional ones. In addition, our HIPS products are recognized for their quality and a range of outstanding properties compared to similar products in the market--for instance, outstanding gloss finishing and excellent chemical resistance. It can replace other materials in many industrial applications to create a lower carbon footprint.”

Anurak RassameeAmornwiwat, Technical Service and Development & Climate Change, Dow Thailand Group said, “Manufacturers should consider utilizing lower-carbon-footprint materials for production to promote sustainability. Being more sustainable is not only about achieving Net Zero emissions goals faster, but it also creates new selling points and business opportunities at the international level.”
