dtac first unveils WiFi Calling in Thailand, for customers to make voice calls globally with WiFi

March 16, 2016 – dtac continues to extend its technology leadership by introducing WiFi Calling or VoWiFi for the first time in Thailand to launch the service. The revolutionary VoWiFi service, operating on Super 4G network, allows dtac customers to make and receive voice calls to/from both fixed and mobile phone numbers over WiFi network anywhere in the world without roaming fees. dtac customers with WiFi Calling enabled smartphones can start using the service from March 16, 2016.
Mr. Prathet Tankuranun, Chief Technology Officer, Total Access Communication PLC or dtac said, “dtac has revolutionized voice calls by launching WiFi Calling or VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) for the first time in Thailand to commercialize this latest mobile technology. The revolutionary VoWiFi service will help dtac customers realize more benefits of Super 4G network and extend voice services to areas with no cellular signal.”
WiFi Calling or VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) is a service that allows dtac customers to make and receive voice calls over a WiFi network anywhere in the world, using their existing numbers on supported devices, without any application required. The service supports calls to both fixed and mobile phones, which is unlike traditional VoIP that requires applications to make calls.
Prathet added, “dtac has developed this new service and package with an aim to provide a customer-friendly offering that does not require a service subscription and uses the same easy-to-understand charging model as the existing voice services on 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.”
Highlights of WiFi Calling or VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) from dtac
1. Customers can make and receive voice calls on WiFi networks (WiFi hotspot, Public WiFi, Pocket WiFi, and Share WiFi), which enables voice calls to be made anywhere in the world with WiFi access. The VoWiFi offers voice services in areas not covered by cellular networks, such as high-rise condominiums or building basements.
2. There is no additional charge to use WiFi Calling.
3. Customers can make and receive voice calls anywhere in the world and pay the same rate as if they are in Thailand. There is no additional charge for making international calls to Thailand or roaming fees for receiving calls while abroad.
4. Customers can make voice calls with their existing numbers without having to key in a long distance or country code (even when calling from overseas). Unlike traditional voice over IP services, both callers and receivers do not require any application to use the service.
“dtac customers can sign up for the service by calling *444*51#. Once they complete a necessary setup on their mobile phones, they can start using WiFi calling service without additional charge. The service will be made available first to monthly subscribers and later to pre-paid subscribers. There are currently 4 WiFi Calling or VoWiFi-enabled devices, including Samsung S6 and Samsung S6 edge, and there will be more enabled devices available in the market soon,” said Prathet.
