Popular Actor Tik Jesdaporn Pholdee joins UNICEF in Mozambique to support children affected by devastating cyclones

BANGKOK, 8 July 2019 – Popular actor Tik Jesdaporn Pholdee has recently travelled with UNICEF team to Mozambique where he met children and families affected by the cyclones. The mission was part of a campaign that aims to raise awareness on the urgent needs of children and families as well as raise funds to support the cyclone survivors.

Limited access to clean water is still a major concern
Contaminated water sources and lack of clean water are exposing over 1.6 million children to the risk of contracting diseases such as Cholera, Malaria, and diarrhea. UNICEF is providing clean water, setting up water pipes to the hardest-hit areas. In this photo, Jesdaporn helps children fill up clean water for them to take home.

More than 1.6 million children in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe are still in need of humanitarian assistance, including healthcare, nutrition, protection, education, as well as water and sanitation services. Cyclone Idai which hit the three countries a few months ago has been the most devastating disaster which hit southern Africa over the past 20 years. Six weeks later, Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in northern Mozambique – the first time in recorded history two strong tropical cyclones have hit the country in the same season.

Coping with education interruption
More than 305,000 children in Mozambique have been affected by interrupted education due to the cyclones. UNICEF and partners are establishing temporary learning centres to get children back in school as quickly as possible. At a primary school which was severely damaged by the cyclone, Jesdaporn joins children during their English class.

Last month, UNICEF Thailand launched a campaign to appeal to the Thai public for urgent donations in support of children and families affected by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, naming Jesdaporn as the Campaign Champion.
Together, the future will be brighter

UNICEF and partners are working tirelessly to provide humanitarian assistance to affected population. The needs remain urgent and massive. At the end of the mission, Jesdaporn said “Children and families are still suffering in the aftermath of the cyclone, up until this day. I’m worried about their future, especially the future of the children who deserve to grow up in better living conditions. I truly believe that the support from Thai people in times like this will become a vital force that could help these children to overcome obstacles and return to normal life again.”
