Devices co-engineered with Leica considered best photo smartphone
by universally-recognised photography industry body
Huawei
Consumer Business Group has announced that the HUAWEI P10 and P10 Plus
have won the inaugural Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Award
for Best Photo Smartphone.
Following
the technical and commercial success of the HUAWEI P9 – which has
already sold over twelve million units around
the world – the HUAWEI P10 benefits from an evolution of the company’s
partnership with Leica Camera, with Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 and Leica
Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition, resulting in TIPA considering it to be one
of the best photographic and imaging products
of 2017.The HUAWEI P10 and P10 Plus embrace the art of photography,
inside and out. The world’s first 8MP Leica front camera makes every
shot a cover shot, allowing anyone to capture perfect portrait
photography in a Leica image style. More accurate feature
recognition is achieved through 3D facial detection technology,
subjects look more natural-looking thanks to the studio-like portrait
features, and portraits are radiant with Dynamic Illumination enabling
professional studio-like re-lighting capabilities.
HUAWEI
P10 and P10 Plus’s Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 enables wide aperture
photography with a natural bokeh effect, whilst
the front camera automatically transitions to wide-angle mode when it
detects there are several people as subjects. Hybrid Zoom, meanwhile,
allows users to focus in on specific areas of an image while keeping the
sharpness of image quality. All this quality
hardware and software expertise is within a signature camera window
that is flush with the back of the device, allowing for a compact and minimalistic
design.
Following
rigorous testing and evaluating, the TIPA Award is universally
recognized as designating high quality cameras,
lenses, accessories, and imaging products. Editors from 27
professional, amateur, and business magazines from Asia, Australia,
Europe and North and South America voted for this year’s awards.
Enthusiasts and professionals regard any TIPA award as a seal of
quality and a responsible suggestion to support their choices in buying
cameras, lenses and accessories.
Demonstrating
how the HUAWEI P10 and P10 Plus truly redefine modern portraiture, upon
launch Huawei partnered with Leica
and internationally renowned art institution Saatchi Gallery to
commission and curate portraiture from seven highly regarded
photographers – including Chris Levine, Berndnaut Smilde and Manfred
Baumann – based around the theme and their interpretation of the
New Aesthetic. The artists’ work debuted at a special pop-up exhibition
at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the time of launch, with some
being included in Saatchi Gallery’s Selfie to Self-Expression, the
world’s first exhibition exploring the history
of the selfie from Velazquez to the present day, while celebrating the
truly creative potential of a form of expression often derided for its
inanity. Selfie to Self-Expression is open until May 30th 2017.
Richard Yu, CEO of
Huawei Consumer Business Group commented, “It
is rewarding for the photographic capabilities of the HUAWEI P10 and
P10 Plus to be considered so highly by the
experts of the industry. We receive this award with gratitude, as well
as a passion and belief that we are taking smartphone photography to new
heights. This award is testament that we are achieving what we set out
to achieve – we strive to continue doing
so.”
Thomas
Gerwers, TIPA chairman, says “The P10 and P10 Plus impressed the
Technical Committee and TIPA members with their
innovative features and design that all goes to delivering crisp, sharp
images, with especially exciting advances in low light photo quality.
The collaboration of Leica's fast lenses coupled with twin sensors makes
the P10 and P10 Plus both innovative and
breakthrough products that raise the bar on smartphone photographic
quality.”
